Cadet Women’s Foilists Jane Caulfield and Karina Li Finish top 8 in Budapest

Canada’s Men’s and Women’s Cadet Foil athletes travelled to Budapest this past weekend for the first European Fencing Circuit (EFC) event of the season for foil.

A total of 226 fencers from around the world took part in the women’s competition and three of Canada’s cadet (17U) athletes finished in the top 16!

Jane Caulfield (Edmonton, AB) and Karina Li (Toronto, ON) lost in the quarter finals to finish 6th and 8th respectively. To get to the quarter-finals, Caulfield defeated Rachel Zhang from the USA 15-5, while Li defeated Great Britain’s Amy Home by the same score.

Caulfield lost her quarter-final match to Delphine Devore from the USA 15-7 while Li lost a close bout to the eventual silver medalist Maria-Eleni Chaldaiou from Greece, 15-13.

Also finishing in the top 16 was Ying Cao, who lost her round of 16 bout to Russia’s Anna Udovichenko, bronze medalist of the event.

The top finisher in the men’s event was Daniel Li, who placed 40th out of 254 fencers. There were no team events in this competition.
