In the final day of competition for individual foil in Kazan, Russia, six Canadians looked to continue their campaigns against a list of extremely competitive opponents.

The two men who qualified for the round of 64 were both unsuccessful in their bouts. Anthony Prymack was defeated by Cheung of Hong Kong 15-13 and Maximilien Van Haaster was also eliminated from individual competition after he fell 15-8 to the seventh ranked American Massialas.

Women’s foil saw all four Canadians move on into the round of 64. All the women faced stiff competition, facing four different top ten ranked fencers in the world.

Eleanor Harvey lost her round of 64 bout to the third ranked Russian Deriglazova 13-9. Just coming off from a lower body injury, Alanna Goldie’s limited mobility hampered her performance as she fell to the ninth ranked Russian Korobeynikova. Teammate Shannon Comerford faced a similar fate as she lost to the experienced, tenth ranked American Prescod.

The only Canadian foilist to move out of the round of 64 was Ottawa, ON’s Kelleigh Ryan as she upset the sixth ranked German Golubytskyi by a score of 15-11. Moving on into the round of 32, Ryan faced another German, Anne Sauer, to whom she fell 15-13 in a very close bout.

“Kelleigh’s performance is her second top 32 at World Championships,” said weapon leader Paul ApSimon, “and only the third all time for Canadian women’s foil”. With consistent results this year, the women’s foil team has kept its rank in the top 8 all year. “This young team continues to make progress and have developed a reputation of being fierce competitors on the international circuit”, says ApSimon. Team competition in foil will begin on Monday.

Individual competition has ended in both sabre and foil, and the last day of competition in the epee event will be held tomorrow where two Canadians will look to win their round of 64 pairings. Tomorrow is also the first day of competition in team sabre. Be sure to stay posted on the CFF website and Facebook page for updates on all Canadian fencers.
