2017 Summer Training Camp – Sabre

Manitoba Fencing Association’s 2017 summer guest sabre coach, Maître Vilmos Szabó, is originally from Romania and fenced for his country from 1977 to 1997. At the 1984 Summer Olympics, he won a bronze medal in the team sabre event. He moved to Germany in 1993 and became a fencing coach at TSV Bayer Dormagen.

Maître Szabó has coached the German national sabre team since 2008. Under his coaching, sabre fencer Nicolas Limbach earned a gold medal in the 2009 Junior World Championships, and, a silver in the 2010 and 2011 Senior World Championships.

At the 2014 World Championships, Maître Szabó helped Germany win its first World Sabre Team gold medal. The next year, at the 2015 World’s, the Germans won the bronze team medal, with his sabre fencer Max Hartung winning both the individual and bronze team medal. Maître Szabó also, has several fencers with Junior World Champion Titles, namely Nicholas Limbach and Max Hartung, Mateas Szabo, and Richard Huber.
