Day three of the World Championships in Kazan, Russia saw the beginning of competition in both men’s and women’s individual epee.

The elimination round following pool play for women’s epee ended with an unfortunate matchup between Canadian fencers Daria Jorquera Palmer (Winnipeg) and Joanna Guy (Mississauga). Jorquera Palmer won the contest in overtime and will move on to the round of 64 where she will face the South Korean Choi, ranked 12^th in the World. Joanna Guy and the two other Canadian epeeists Brittany Mark-Larkin (Ile Bizard) and Kay Sze (Vancouver) fought hard but sadly did not qualify for the round of 64.

Over in the men’s epee event, one Canadian has moved on to the round of 64. Hugues Boisvert-Simard from Quebec won handily against the Columbian fencer to move on to the next stage where he will face Czech fencer Jiri Beran on Sunday. Today was the end of road in individual epee competition for Vincent Pelletier (Quebec), Pascal Heidecker (Gatineau) and Marc-Andre Leblanc (Ottawa).

Although only qualifying two for the round of 64, weapon leader David Howes was extremely pleased to have all the epeeists advance out of their pools today.  “While we had hoped that more of our athletes would qualify for the 64s, this is never an easy task in epee, especially with the large numbers of competitors and the depth of talent in their events.” The women’s epee division had a total of 131 athletes competing and the men’s had 178 competitors.

The final rounds of fencing for the individual epee event will be held on the 20^th, the same day team men’s and women’s sabre will begin. In the meantime, competition will continue in both individual sabre and foil events.

Today was the last day of qualification for the rounds of 64 in individual events. Over the past three days of competition, the Canadian team has seen seven women and four men qualify for the next round of competition.
