Strong Performances in Women’s Cadet Foil at the 2015 Fencing Cadet/Junior World Championships
The Canadian Women’s Cadet Foil athletes were in action today at the 2014 Fencing Cadet & Junior World Championships in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.
Sarah Filby (Winnipeg, MB) had an outstanding day, finishing just out of the medal round in 6th place. In 8th place after pools winning 5 out of 6 bouts, Filby had a bye in the round of 64 and then faced Beatrice Hay from Australia in the round of 32. Filby won in convincing fashion by a score of 15-6. In the round of 16, Filby faced Jandee Mo from Korea and came out on top 15-10.
Filby’s winning streak came to an end in the round of 8 in her loss to Leonie Ebert of Germany 13-6. Ebert went on to win the gold medal in the competition.
Canadian Angela Li (Toronto, ON) also had a strong performance. Li finished in 16th place, losing her bout 15-9 in the round of 16 to Janka Toth from Hungary.
The last day of Cadet competition takes place tomorrow with the Cadet Mixed Team Competition, the first time that this event has taken place at the Cadet World Championships. The team is composed of one athlete from each weapon and gender. Canada’s team will be comprised of: Monica Lubczynski (Women’s Epee), Angela Li (Women’s Foil), Madison Thurgood (Women’s Sabre), Nikola Damjanovic (Men’s Epee), Sean Grant (Men’s Foil) and Jean-Etienne Beauchamp (Men’s Sabre).
