Canada Completes another Successful Junior/Cadet Fencing World Championships

The 2015 Junior/Cadet Fencing World Championships in Tashkent, Uzbekistan have come to an end and based on Canada’s results, the future continues to look bright. 

It was a repeat from 2014 in the medal count with Canada coming away with two medals.  Loic Beaulieu (Sherbrooke, QC) won a bronze medal in Cadet Men’s Epee, while Eleanor Harvey (Hamilton, ON) once again won silver in Junior Women’s Foil.  Both athletes put in outstanding performances to reach the podium by defeating top ranked fencers.

Canada also had a number of other excellent individual performances. Sarah Filby (Winnipeg, MB) just missed the podium in 6th place in Cadet Women’s Foil while her teammate Angela Li (Toronto, ON) finished in 16th place.  Sean Grant (Edmonton, AB) was 18th in Cadet Men’s Foil and was also the top Canadian in Junior Men’s Foil at 27th. Monica Lubczynski (Pointe Claire, QC) also competed in both Cadet and Junior, finishing 17th in both events which had over 100 competitors in each. Pascal Lambert (L’Epiphanie, QC) came 24th out of 96 competitors in Men’s Junior Sabre.

Canada also had a number of top 16 performances in team competition. Canada finished in 7th place in the new category of Cadet Mixed Team, defeating top ranked Germany along the way. The Junior Women’s Epee Team finished in 13th place while the Junior Men’s Epee Team finished one place behind in 14th.   The Junior Women’s Foil team finished in 16th place without the participation of Eleanor Harvey who had to return to University following the Individual competition.

The 2015 Junior/Cadet World Championships caps off a great season that saw Canadian junior athletes win medals in European Circuit events, Pan Am Junior Championships, and World Cup competition in addition to the Junior World Championships.
