Schenkel, Comerford Highlight Day at World Championships
July 16 – Eli Schenkel and Shannon Comerford both advanced to the table of 32 in their respective foil events today at the 2015 Fencing World Championships.
Wednesday marked the final day of individual competition as the sabre teams were the first to do battle at the Olympiyskiy in Moscow, Russia.
Schenkel won a thrilling table of 64 bout against 2012 Olympic silver medalist Alaaeldin Abouelkassem of Egypt by the tightest of margins, 15-14. Unfortunately he was unable to get past American Gerek Meinhardt in the table of 32, good for 32nd place overall.
On the women’s side, Comeford took down Germany’s Anne Sauer by a score of 15-12 to advance to the table of 32, where she ultimately fell to the FIE’s fourth overall seed, Ines Boubakri, by a score of 15-9, which earned her 27th place in the results table.
Max Van Haaster, Eleanor Harvey, Alanna Goldie and Kelleigh Ryan we’re all eliminated in the table of 64 – Van Haaster finished 50th on the men’s side, while Goldie, Harvey and Ryan finished 35th, 41st and 54th, respectively.
Wednesday also marked the start of the men’s and women’s team sabre competitions. The men won a tight battle against the Japanese team, pulling out a 45-42 victory in the table of 32 before falling 45-20 to the powerful Koreans. The women’s team fell in their table of 32 bout, 45-36, to Kazakhstan.
Tomorrow the men’s and women’s epee teams will return to action.
