July 18 – The Canadian men and women’s foil teams ended the 2015 Fencing World Championships on a high note as both finished in the top 16 on Saturday.

The women’s team of Eleanor Harvey, Alanna Goldie, Kelleigh Ryan and Shannon Comerford lost in their table of 16 bout against Poland by a score of 43-22.

They won their two placement bouts against Australia and Ukraine, but the Poland bout got off to a rough start for the women and while they valiantly tried to narrow the deficit they ultimately ran out of racetrack.

The men’s side, which consists of Anthony Prymack, Max Van Haaster, Eli Schenkel and Etienne Lalonde-Turbide, soundly defeated Mexico in the table of 32 by a score of 45-26. They were unable to get past the host Russian in the table of 16, falling by a score of 45-32.

The men breezed through the Mexicans, as they held sizeable leads throughout the bout all the way until the end. The Russians proved to be a more difficult foe, and while the Canadians kept it close at first, the Russians began to pull away halfway through the bout, en route to the win.

With the world championships now complete, the Canadian Pan Am team will now hop on a flight back to Toronto, where they will attempt to defend their home soil against the rest of the Americas. The fencing events kick off on Monday, July 20^th, with individual men and women’s sabre.
