(August 5, 2013) In the first day of competition at the Senior World Championships in Budapest, Hungary, men’s Saber athletes, Joseph Polossifakis and Philippe Beaudry finished the pool round ranked 11th and 13th respectively. Both athletes won 5 out of 6 bouts which earned them direct qualification to the tableau of 64.

“It went well for me,” noted Beaudry, currently ranked 32 in the world. “I have been training hard these last few months and I was able to execute on the areas that I worked on. Things went well, especially mentally. Other than the one bout I lost, I made good tactical choices and my game plans worked well.”

Polossifakis was also pleased with his performance, noting, “I felt light on my feet and quick in my execution.”

Saber athlete Shaul Gordon finished the pool round with 3 wins and 3 losses. He then fenced in the elimination round against Belarus athlete Alexei Romanovitch winning 15-10 to also advance to the tableau of 64. Mark Peros unfortunately failed to advance following a loss in the elimination round after a 2-3 record in pool play.

It was also a good day for women’s foil with 3 out of the 4 Canadian athletes also advancing to the tableau of 64. Kelleigh Ryan and Alanna Goldie both finished pool play with a record of 4-2 while Eleanor Harvey finished with 2 wins and 3 losses. All three advance to the tableau of 64. In women’s epee, Joanna Guy is the only one to advance. Guy’s finished the day with pool play results of 4 wins and 2 losses, followed by a win in the elimination round.

Preliminary competition for women’s sabre, men’s épée and men’s foil take place today.
