May 25, 2014 – After taking home a silver medal in Men’s Epee on Saturday, wheelchair fencer Pierre Mainville stepped onto the podium again Sunday, winning bronze in Saber at the Lonato World Cup in Italy.

It is the first time that Mainville has been on the podium twice in one World Cup competition. “I am happy with my results this weekend,” said Mainville. “I only regret that my family, friends and coach are not here to share this experience with me.”

Mainville lost his semi-final bout to Italian Alesso Sarri 15-5, earning him the bronze. “I am working with my coach on a new strategy but it unfortunately didn’t work in my last bout,” stated Mainville. “I captured it on film and will watch it with him to see where we can make corrections but without my coach here, I was not able to make adjustments during the duel.”

Mainville finished the poules ranked third overall with five victories and one loss. He defeated Zbgniew Wyganowski 15-11 in the quarter-finals.  “I usually have difficulty defeating him but this time I dominated the bout,” noted Mainville. “I had a good lead and started trying some new strategies, before coming back to my game plan to finish off the bout.”

This bronze medal is Mainville’s fourth World Cup medal since January.  He returns to Canada to take a well-deserved rest for a few weeks before resuming training for the next event later this summer.
