Canada’s Junior Epee Team Finishes 8th in the Junior World Cup in Spain
Canada’s top junior women’s epee and junior women’s foil athletes competed in World Cups this past weekend.
Canada’s women’s epee team of Cindy Gao (VGO, Toronto, ON), Monica Lubczynski (BRE, Pointe-Claire, QC), Alexanne Verret (STH, Quebec, QC) and Emma Von Dadelszen (DYN, Richmond, BC) had Canada’s top result, finishing 8th in the team event at the Junior World Cup on Burgos, Spain.
Canada defeated Japan in the 16’s by a score of 45-20 to advance to the quarter-finals. Canada then lost to France 45-26. Their final loss against Hungary by a close score of 45-41 gave then 8th place overall.
Emma Von Dadelszen (DYN, Vancouver, BC) had Canada’s top result in Individual competition – finishing 50th after losing her 64’s bout by a close score of 15-13 to Vanessa Riedmueller from Germany.
Canada’s top junior women’s foil athletes competed in the Junior World Cup in Lyon, France. The team of Ariane Bilodeau (MOU, Outremont, QC), Jane Caulfield (EFC, Edmonton, AB), Cynthia Liu (EFC, Canadian living in US) and Naomi Moindrot-Zilliox (OM, St-Lambert, QC) finished 10th overall. The team lost to Germany in the 16’s by a score of 44-33 and then defeated Ireland 45-35. They lost their last bout by a close score of 41-39 to Spain to finish in 10th place.
Canada had three athletes advance to the 64’s in Individual competition. Naomi Mondrot-Zilliox (OM, St-Lambert, QC) had Canada’s top finish of 33rd, Ariane Bilodeau (MOU, Outremont, QC) was 47th, while cadet-aged Ying Cao (TFC, Toronto, ON) was 50th.
Canada’s Junior Men’s Foil Team was in London, England for a World Cup and finished in 15th place.
Canada’s Senior Sabre athletes travelled to Mexico to take part in the Cancun Sabre Grand Prix. Marissa Ponich (Edmonton, AB) and Gabriella Page (Blainville, QC) both earned points by advancing to the 64’s. Ponich lost to Japan’s Seira Yamamoto 15-7 to finish ranked 44th while Page lost a heartbreaker to Italy’s Loreta Gulotta 15-13 to finish 58th overall. Canada’s top men were Marc Gelinas (Blainville, QC) in 73rd and Fares Arfa (Laval, QC) in 81st. Grand Prix’s are the FIE’s highest level of event other than World Championships.
FIE Competition resumes again January 7-8, 2017 with a number of Junior World Cups being staged that weekend.
