Canada’s Junior Women’s Epee Team Wins Bronze at the San Juan Junior World Cup

Fencing Weekend Wrap-Up: Nov. 27, 2018

Canadian Fencers were in action all over the world this past weekend.  Canadians took part in the women’s epee junior world cup event in San Juan, Puerto Rico.  Canada’s team of Tessa Mierzcuk (SWP, Toronto, ON), Christina Zozulya (DYN, West Vancouver, BC), Ariane Leonard (OM, St-Lambert, QC) and Shirley Guo (VGO, North York, ON) took home a bronze medal after defeating Great Britain by a score of 45-37. Canada defeated Japan 31-17 to advance to the semi-finals where the team faced USA and lost 37-29, putting them in the final for bronze.  Canada’s top performers in the Individual competition were Christina Zozulya who finished 11th and Tessa Mierzcuk who was 14th overall.

Canada’s women’s foil team competed in the Senior World Cup in Alger.  Jessica Guo (HHF, North York, ON) finished 22nd in her Senior World Cup debut.  Guo who is 13 years of age went undefeated in poules to advance to the top 64 where she defeated Hanna Lyczbinska from Poland 15-8.  Guo’s first loss came in the top 32 against USA’s Jacqueline Dubrovich by a score of 15-12 to finish in 22nd place overall.  Finishing in the top 64 were Eleanor Harvey (Hamilton, ON) in 35th and Alanna Goldie (Calgary, AB) who was 62nd.  On Sunday, Canada’s Women’s Foil team of Eleanor Harvey, Alanna Goldie, Jessica Guo and Kelleigh Ryan (Ottawa, ON) finished in 10th place.

Canada’s Men’s Epee Team competed in a Senior World Cup in Berne.  The young team of Marc-Antoine Blais-Belanger (Montreal, QC), Fynn Fafard (DYN, Roberts Creek, BC), Dylan French (DYN, Richmond, BC) and Seraphim Jarov (DYN, Surrey, BC) lost in the top 32 to the Czech Republic by a score of 45-37 to finish 24th overall.

Canada’s Cadet men’s foil fencers competed in the Cadet European Circuit event in Modling, Austria.  Brian Li (Canadian in US) finished 24th and Niklas Holland (UNA, Ontario) was 50th out of 200 fencers.

Competition wraps up Nov. 28th at the 2018 Senior and Veteran Commonwealth Fencing Championships in Australia with a full summary of the results to follow.
