CANADA’S SENIOR MEN’S SABRE TEAM FINISHES 15TH IN POLAND

Fencing Weekend Update, Feb. 4, 2019

The Senior Men’s Sabre team of Marc Gelinas(Blainville, Québec), Shaul Gordon(Montreal, Québec), JosephPolossifakis(Montreal, QC), and Fares Arfa(Laval, Quebec) competed in Warsaw, Poland this past weekend at the World Cup. Canada won their first match against Argentina 45-36 to advance to the top 16’s to face Germany. The team lost to Germany 35-45, and were then relegated to the 9-16 elimination bouts. The team won their last match to Colombia to finish in 15thplace overall.

Joseph Polossifakiswas Canada’s top fencer in Individual competition, qualifying to the top 64.  Polossifakis had five wins and one loss in poules and won both of his elimination bouts to make the main draw on Saturday. Polossifakis faced Aldo Montano from Italy in the top 64’s and lost 15-12 to finish 47thoverall.

Darren Dong(Canadian living in the US), Niklas Holland(UNA, ON), Mateusz Kozak(TFC, Ontario), and Simon Poon(TFC, Ontario), competed in the team event at the Junior Men’s Foil World Cup in Leszno, Poland.  Canada defeated Finland 45-26 to advance to the top 16’s where they faced Team USA. Canada lost 26-45 and then lost their first placing bout 45-41 to the Netherlands. Canada finished off on a winning note, defeating Turkey and Sweden in their next two bouts to finish in 13thplace overall.
