Canada’s Women’s Foil Team Advances to the Quarter-finals at the 2018 Senior World Fencing Championships
On day one of the Women’s Foil Team competition at the 2018 Senior World Fencing Championships, Canada’s team of Shannon Comerford (Saskatoon, SK), Alanna Goldie (Calgary, AB), Eleanor Harvey (Hamilton, ON) and Kelleigh Ryan (Ottawa, ON) advanced to the quarter-finals.
Due to their 6th place ranking in the world, Team Canada had a bye to the round of 16 where Canada faced a challenging Team Hungary. The lead bounced between both countries until Canada’s Goldie scored 8 touches over her opponent going into the final bout putting Canada ahead 39-34. Harvey ended the bout by maintaining the five-point lead and finishing with a final score of 44-39.
“What a roller coaster match,” said Head Coach Paul ApSimon who congratulated the athletes, coaching staff and support staff for the win. “Hungary gave a great fight and Team Canada rose to the challenge.”
Canada now faces 3rd seed USA in the quarter-finals on Thursday. Three years ago from today, Canada defeated USA in the finals at the 2011 Pan Am Games on home soil in Toronto and will be trying for a repeat of this performance.
Also in action in the team competition on Thursday are Canada’s Men’s Foil Team who face Denmark in the 32’s, and 13th seed Team Canada in Women’s Sabre who have a bye to the 16’s and fence 4th seed Russia.
