Canadian Fencers Come Home with 3 Medals in Senior FIE competition
Canada’s top fencers were in action around the world this past weekend competing in FIE competitions that contribute to world rankings.
Canada’s men’s and women’s sabre fencers were in Reyjavic, Iceland competing in the FIE Satellite competition and came away with three medals!
Marc Gelinas (Blainville, QC) earned a silver medal after defeating Canadian Olympian Joseph Polossifakis (Laval, QC) in the semifinal, who then took bronze. It was a close bout with Gelinas coming out on top 15-12 to advance to the final, where he lost 15-10 to Stefano Lucchetti of Argentina.
Marissa Ponich (Edmonton, AB) also had a great tournament in Iceland, advancing to the semi-finals where she lost to USA’s Alexis Browne who went on to win the competition. Ponich took home bronze for a total of 3 medals for Canadian Sabre athletes in Iceland.
Canadian men and women epee athletes were in Split, Croatia for a FIE Satellite competition and Olympian Leonora MacKinnon was Canada’s top fencer, with a quarter-final loss to Anna Kun from Hungary which put her in 6th place overall.
Canada’s Women’s Foil team was in Tauberbischofsheim, Germany for a FIE World Cup level competition. Eleanor Harvey (Hamilton, ON) was Canada’s top fencer, finishing 10th overall. In the team competition, Canada finished in 11th place, losing to Poland in the 16’s which put them into the 9-16 placement rounds. Canada’s women’s foil team has had a solid season and is now ranked 6th in the World.
