Canadian fencers Shaul Gordon and Fares Arfa reach the podium at the junior saber world cup in Phoenix
It was another great weekend for Canadian fencers in Junior World Cup competition with Shaul Gordon winning silver and Arfa Fares earning bronze at the Junior Sabre World Cup staged Feb. 2-3 in Phoenix, Arizona.
Gordon who hails from Richmond, BC defeated Pascual Maria Di Tella from Argentina 15-13 to advance to the finals. In the other semi-final, Canadian Arfa Fares from Laval, QC faced American Eli Dershwitz and was defeated 15-9 to earn a bronze medal. The final was a contest between Gordon and Dershwitz, who is currently ranked 3rd in the Junior World rankings, with Dershwitz finally coming out on top 15-10.
The silver and bronze medal finishes for Gordon and Fares represent the 3rd medal for Canadians in Junior World Cup competition this season. Alanna Goldie from Calgary won Canada’s first ever gold medal in Junior World Cup foil in Leszno, Poland in December.
Next up for Canadian Junior Fencers is the Junior/Cadet Pan American Championships in Ponce, Puerto Rico from February 6 to 11. Canada has sent a delegation of 31 athletes.
The Junior World Championships take place April 9 to 15, 2013 in Porec, Croatia.
