GWANGJU, South Korea (Team Canada) – The Canadian fencing team began competition with women’s epee and men’s sabre on Saturday. Julien Hogues posted the best result, reaching the round of 32.

After a preliminary phase where he earned a record of 3-3, Hogues (Concordia University) won a tight contest in the round of 64. He bested American GabrielArmijo by a 15-14 score. Up next, the Montreal native took an 8-5 lead over Germany’s Frederik Koch before his opponent prevailed 15-13.

Cédric Boutet, also of Concordia, qualified for the round of 64 with a record of 2-4 in the preliminary round, scoring 20 points with 22 against along the way. However, his progress was halted by Leonardo Affede of Italy, who claimed a 15-11 victory in the round of 64. Daniel Carleton (Capilano University) went winless in the preliminary round and did not advance.

On the women’s side, Louise Fournier (McGill University) passed through the preliminary round with a record of 2-4 and a point differential of -1. She was defeated in the round of 64 by Jessie Gottesman Radanovich of the United States, 15-10.

Fencing continues Sunday with two events and three Canadians in action. Clément Femenias-Metivet and Vincent Lavoie will pick up the men’s epee and Aimee Shryer will compete in women’s foil.

The Summer Universiade is an international multi-sport event that takes place every two years and is second only to the Olympic Games in the number of participating athletes and countries. The Universiade is open to competitors who are at least 17 and less than 28 years of age as of January 1 in the year of the Games. Participants must be full-time students at a post-secondary institution (university, college, CEGEP) or have graduated from a post-secondary institution in the year preceding the event.
