Fencing Weekend Wrap-Up, Nov. 28 – FIE Congress and Canada’s Cadet Women’s Foil Team takes Home Bronze

By CFF November 28, 2016

Canada’s Cadet (U17) foil athletes were the only ones in competition this past weekend with the FIE Congress taking place in Moscow, and consequently no FIE competitions being held. Canada’s Cadet Men’s and Women’s Foil athletes competed in the Cadet European Fencing Circuit (EFC) event in Cabries, France.

Canada’s Women’s Foil Team of Ying Cao (TFC, Toronto, ON), Jessica Guo (HHF, Toronto, ON), Karina Li (HHF, Toronto, ON) and Cynthia Liu (EFC, Canadian living in the US) competed as Canada 1 and came home with a bronze medal!

A total of 30 teams took part in the competition. Canada 1 finished first in their poules and had a bye to the 16’s. There they faced Team Nouvelle Aquitaine from France and defeated them 45-35. Canada 1 then faced Russia 2 in the quarter-finals and came away with a resounding win, 45-22.

Canada’s only loss came in the semi-finals to USA 1, losing 45-35 and finishing tied for 3rd with Russia 1 for a bronze medal.

Canada’s top Men’s Foil Team finished 14th out of 45 teams in the Men’s Foil Team competition.

CFF President Brad Goldie (Calgary, AB) travelled to Moscow this past weekend to attend the FIE’s Elective Congress. Several other Canadians also made the trip in the hope of being selected by the delegates for FIE Commissions.

The CFF is very pleased to announce that the following Canadians were successful in being selected to FIE Commissions for the next four years:

Manuel Belmonte – Rules of the Game Commission

Dr. Lisa Huzel – Medical Commission

Yann Bernard – Legal Commission

With three Commission members, Canada is part of a small number of nations with three or more commission members. Congratulations to our successful candidates and Canada looks forward to having a greater voice at the FIE level.

Alisher Usmanov (Russia) was elected to a third term as the President of the International Fencing Federation (FIE). Mr. Usmanov’s election follows what is viewed as the most successful Olympic Games in the history of fencing.
