All Four of Canada’s Women’s Foil Fencers Advance to the Top 64 at the 2018 Senior World Fencing Championships
Canada’s Women’s Foil Team continues to excel with all four of the Women’s Foil Team members advancing to the top 64 in Individual competition yesterday at the 2018 Senior World Fencing Championships in Wuxi, China.
Eleanor Harvey from Hamilton is currently ranked 8th in the World rankings and received a bye to the main draw. Harvey’s first bout of the Championships will be against Freya Clarke from Australia in the top 64’s, which take place Monday, July 23rd.
Kelleigh Ryan (Ottawa, ON) and Alanna Goldie (Calgary, AB) both finished with four wins and one loss in poules. Ryan and Goldie were ranked 2nd and 3rd respectively after poules and advanced directly to the 64’s. Ryan will face Adelina Zagidullina from Russia on Monday, while Goldie will fence Arantza Inastroza from Chile.
Junior aged Naomi Moindrot-Zilliox (Saint-Lambert, QC) also advanced. Moindrot-Zilliox finished with two wins and three losses in poules, and then won her elimination bout against Sophia Wu of Honk Kong by a score of 11-9. Moindrot-Zilliox will fence 4th ranked Arriana Errigo from Italy on Monday.
Canada had two entries in men’s epee with Marc-Antoine Blais-Belanger advancing to the 64’s in a convincing fashion. Blais-Belanger won all five of his poule bouts to advance directly to the main draw where he will fence 48th seed Aymerick Gally of France on Monday. Maxime Brinck-Croteau had three wins and two losses in poules but unfortunately lost his elimination bout to Daniel Lis of Israel 15-11 to finish 99th overall.
Next up today are the preliminary rounds in Individual competition for Men’s Foil and Women’s Sabre.
