Shaul Gordon finishes 6th in Men’s Saber at the Junior World Championships
Shaul Gordon from Vancouver had an outstanding second day in men’s saber, finishing 6th out of 105 competitors. Gordon defeated Stefano Ivan Lucchetti (ARG) 15-7 in the round of 32 and Leonardo Affede (ITA) 15-7 in the round of 16, before being defeated by Kamil Ibragimov (RUS) 15-8, who was the eventual winner of the competition.
The second day of competition was a roller coaster ride for our Canadian women’s foil athletes. Eleanor Harvey (Hamilton, ON) faced off against fellow Canadian Alanna Goldie (Calgary, AB) in the round of 32. The Canadians were ranked 4th and 5th respectively on the FIE World Junior rankings going into the competition. Harvey won the bout 15-11, eliminating Goldie from the competition ranked 17th overall out of 91 competitors. Harvey then went on to face Russian Leyla Pirieva. It was a close battle with both competitors tied to the end. Harvey ended up losing the bout in a video replay ruling. As a consequence, Harvey finished 14th and Pirieva went on to win the silver medal. Jerrica Gu (Edmonton Alberta) fenced Pirieva in her round of 32 match earlier in the day, losing 15-10 to finish in 20th place.
No fencers advanced in men’s or women’s epee. Men’s foil and women’s saber are in action today, with the team events starting April 12th in women’s foil and men’s saber.
