Three Top 16 Finishes for Canada’s Junior Sabre Athletes at the 2019 Junior & Cadet World Fencing Championships
Canada is off to a strong start at the 2019 Junior & Cadet World Fencing Championships in Torun, Poland. Canada’s top junior and cadet sabre athletes started off the competition over the weekend through to Monday.
Francois Cauchon(BRE, Montreal, QC) had Canada’s first top 16 result, finishing 15thout of over 145 fencers in the Junior Men’s Individual Sabre competition. After winning his elimination bout, Cauchon defeated third seed Medhat Moataz from Egypt 15-13 in the 64’s. Cauchon then defeated Diego Santamaria from Mexico 15-11 to advance to the top 16’s. Cauchon lost to Mitchell Saron form the USA to finish in 15thplace overall. Angelo Chiara(BRE, Montreal, QC) finished in 55thplace, Andrew Wei(BRE, Montreal, QC) was 62ndand Hunter Moricz(NVF, North Vancouver, BC) was 89thoverall.
Laurie-Ann Lamothe(SPA, Montreal, QC) was Canada’s only Women’s Sabre competitor and finished in 12thplace overall in the Cadet Women’s Sabre competition. Lamothe had five wins and one loss in poules, ranking her 11thgoing into the top 64’s. She won her first bout against a Uzbekistan competitor 15-11 and then won again in the 32’s by a score of 15-9 against her competitor from Romania. Lamothe’s day came to an end in the 16’s with her loss to 6thseed Kim Sebin from Korea by a score of 15-7 to finish in 12thplace overall.
Canada’s Junior Men’s Sabre Team of Francois Cauchon, Angelo Chiara, Hunter Moricz, and Andrew Weicompeted in the team event Monday and finished in 11thplace overall. Canada advanced to the top 16’s after defeating Hong Kong by a close score of 45-41. Canada then lost a nail biter to Great Britain 45-44 to be relegated to the 9-16 ranking bouts. Canada defeated Poland 45-41 but then lost to Korea to advance to the 11-12 placing bout. Canada finished off the competition strong, defeating Belarus by one point to finish in 11thplace overall.
