Two medals for Women’s Foil at Junior Pan Am Fencing Championships
Women's foil led the way on the second day of Junior Individual competition at the Junior/Cadet Pan Am Fencing Championships in Cancun, Mexico.
All four of Canada's women's foil athletes advanced to the quarter-finals but unfortunately the draw was not in their favour as they faced each other. Sarah Filby (Canadian living in the US) defeated Ariane Bilodeau (Outremont, QC) 15-10 in one quarter-final while Angela Li (Toronto, ON) defeated Ying Cao (Toronto, ON) 15-11 in the other bout. As a result Cao finished 5th overall while Bilodeau was ranked 7th.
In the semi-finals, Filby faced Gabriela Cecchini from Brazil and lost 15-8 to take home a bronze medal. Cecchini went on to win gold. Li faced Morgan Partridge from the USA and lost her bout 15-11 to give Canada its second bronze medal in women's foil.
Men's Epee was also in action yesterday with no Canadians making the top 8. Matson Lalor (White Rock, BC) was the top Canadian in 9th while Loic Beaulieu (Sherbrooke, QC) was 15th and Loup-Yann Ferre (Quebec, QC) was 24th on the day. Canada's top junior men's epee athlete Dylan French (Richmond, BC) unfortunately missed the competition due to flight delays. Dylan is in his first year at Notre Dame in Ohio.
Canada just missed the medal round in men's saber. Cameron McKay (Winnipeg, MB) finished in 5th place after losing his quarter-final bout to Mexican Hector Florencie 15-7. Falan Kennedy (Ardrossan, AB) came 14th, Hunter Moricz (North Vancouver, BC) finished 17th and David Brown (Canadian in US) was 27th overall.
Junior Team competition starts Thursday and Canada is hoping to equal or better its record of medals in four of the six categories from 2015.
Canada currently sits at a total of 15 medals in this competition (3 gold, 6 silver, 6 bronze) so far with the team competitions still to go.
