Van Haaster Wins Silver in FIE Senior Men’s Foil Satellite Event in Barcelona

Maximilien Van Haaster (Montreal, QC) took part in the FIE Senior Men’s Foil Satellite event in Barcelona, Spain this past weekend and finished with a silver medal.

Van Haaster was undefeated in poules with 6 wins and 0 losses which put him directly into the tableau of 64. Van Haaster’s closest elimination bout was against Andrej Rzadkowski in the 16’s, with Van Haaster advancing 15-13.  He then defeated Italy’s Filippo Guerro 15-5 in the quarter-finals and Sergio Lacasta from Spain 15-3 in the semi-finals.  Van Haaster’s only loss of the day came in the final against Carlos Llavador from Spain 15-11 giving him second place on the podium.

Junior Blake Broszus also had a great day in Barcelona, finishing in 5th place after losing his quarter-final bout to Spain’s Sergio Lacasta 15-8.

Several Canadian foil fencers took part in the European Fencing Circuit’s U23 event in Sabadell, Spain on Sunday. Kelleigh Ryan from Ottawa took gold in the women’s foil event, defeating Andrea Breteau of Spain 15-12 in the final.  Junior Alex Cai (Brampton, ON) finished in 6th place in the men’s foil competition.

Ted Vinnitchouk (Toronto, ON) travelled to Klagenfurt, Austria to take part in the Cadet (U17) European Fencing Circuit event in Men’s Epee. The event featured over 180 fencers from 26 countries and Vinnitchouk finished in 12th place overall.

Canada’s Men’s and Women’s Junior foil athletes will be in action next weekend at the FIE Junior World Cup event in London, England.
