All Three Canadian Teams Medal at the Junior Pan Am Fencing Championships

All three Canadian teams who were in action Thursday at the Junior Pan Am Fencing Championships in Cancun, Mexico made the medal rounds, winning a gold, silver and bronze medal in the process.

Canada's Women's Epee Team continued their winning ways, defeating the USA 40-39 in an exciting final that went into overtime.  Emma Von Dadelszen (Vancouver, BC), Cindy Gao (Toronto, ON), Monica Lubczynski (Pointe Claire, QC), and Alexanne Verret (Quebec, QC) faced hometown team Mexico in the semi-final, defeating them 39-30 before taking the gold in the final.

Canada's Men's Foil Team consisting of Sean Grant (Canada in the USA), Daniel Gu (Edmonton, AB), Christopher Sheardown (Medecine Hat, AB) and Misha Sweet (Winnipeg, MB) had an outstanding day and took home a silver medal after losing a close bout to Team USA in the final by a score of 45-41.  Canada defeated a strong Brazil Team in their semi-final by the same score to advance to the final.

Canada's women's sabre team fought valiantly to take third place in their competition.  The team of Madison Thurgood (Edmonton, AB), Frederique Bourget (Blainville, QC) and sisters Veronique and Rachel Lamarre (Blainville, QC) lost their semi-final bout to the USA in a close 45-41. The USA then went on to win gold against Mexico.  Team Canada then faced Venezuela in the battle for bronze and won by a score of 45-39 to give Canada its third medal of the day.

In action Friday, the last day of competition, are the team events for Men's Epee, Women's Foil and Men's Sabre.

Canada now sits with a total of 18 medals overall in the zone Championship with three more medals up for grabs.
