Canada Has One Top 10 and Five Top 16 Finishes at the 2017 Junior World Fencing Championships

Dylan French (DYN, Richmond, BC) led all Canadians with his top ten finish in Junior Men’s Epee at the 2017 Junior World Fencing Championships in Plovdiv, Bulgaria.

French finished in 10th place out of 193 fencers. He lost his round of 16 bout by one point, a heartbreaking 15-14 to Maciej Bielec from Poland to advance to the quarter-finals. French has had success in Plovdiv before. In 2014, French came 5th at the Junior World Championships, staged in Plovdiv. He also finished with a bronze medal in Cadet Men’s Epee that year.

Canada had some strong team performances. Following is a summary of Canada’s top 16 team results:

JR Women’s Epee (Cindy Gao, Ariane Leonard, Alexanne Verret, Emma Von Dadelszen) – 10th

JR Men’s Sabre (Francois Cauchon, Angelo Chiara, Spencer McPhedran, Hunter Moricz) – 11th

JR Women’s Sabre (Frederique Bourget, Marina Guintchinskaia, Rachel Lamarre, Madison Thurgood) – 11th

JR Men’s Foil (Blake Broszus, Daniel Gu, Brandon Jalowica, Adam Nazarali) – 11th

Junior Women’s Foil (Ariane Bilodeau, Jane Caulfield, Cynthia Liu, Naomi Moindrot-Zilliox) – 13th
