CANADA’S JUNIOR MEN’S SABRE TEAM WINS SILVER AT THE FIE JUNIOR WORLD CUP IN PHOENIX

Fencing Weekend Wrap-Up: Jan 21, 2019

Canadian Junior Fencers were in action all over the world this weekend.

Competing in Phoenix, Arizona in the Junior Men’s Sabre World Cup Team event were François Cauchon (BRE, Québec, QC), Andrew Wei (BRE, Québec, QC), Angelo Chiara (BRE, Québec, QC), and Nicholas Dinu (BRE, Québec, QC). The Canadian team defeated home team USA 45-40 to move on to the semifinals. Canada then defeated Germany 45-39 to move on to the finals against Italy, losing 29-45 to take home the silver medal for Canada.

Competing in Zagreb, Croatia in Women’s Foil was Tinney Mak (HHF, ON) who placed 7th overall with over 160 athletes participating. Mak had four wins and 1 loss in poules and was undefeated in elimination bouts until her 15-8 loss against Lauren Scruggs from USA in the quarter-finals. Scruggs went on to take home silver and Mak finished in 7thplace.

Competing in the Junior Women’s Foil Team event also in Zagreb was Ying Cao (TFC/NYF, Toronto, ON), Jane Caulfield (EFC, Edmonton, Alberta), Annie Lin (TFC, Toronto, ON), and Tinney Mak (HHF, Ontario).  The team lost a close match against Germany to advance to the quarter finals by the score of 44-45. The team finished ninth overall after defeating Czech Republic, Great Britain and Chile in the 9-12 ranking bouts.
