Canada’s Veteran Fencers Compete in another Successful 2018 Can/Am Veterans Cup

By CFF June 1, 2018

The Canadian Fencing Federation’s Veteran’s Program, under the leadership of 2018 President’s Award winner Gaby Weisz, once again staged another successful Can/Am Veteran’s Cup.  The event featured 160 fencers, many competing in multiple weapons, and was staged at the Vango Toronto Fencing Centre, in Markham, Ontario.  The event had a record attendance of 13 fencers aged 70+.

Fencers from the United States, Hong Kong, Russia, Bermuda and Canada, were among the participants. American veteran fencers once again attended in great numbers, winning 13 gold medals. Canadians came away with six gold medals, and Russia was in third with three gold medals.

Competition was tough, camaraderie was great, and the level of fencing was truly world class. Seven World Championship, 11 Commonwealth Championship and two European Championships medalists participated, making the Can/Am Veterans Cup one of the premiere veteran fencing competitions in the Americas.

A Gala Dinner/Dance on Saturday was attended by 97 fencers and supporters. This year’s honoree was Kyle Foster from Oakville, Ontario who was presented with a plaque by the Veterans Committee of the Canadian Fencing Federation, for his accomplishments in, and dedication to, Veterans fencing. A “Certificate of Appreciation” was also presented to Allan Weinbaum for his ongoing generous support of the Can/Am Veterans Cup.

The Women’s Champion at Arms was awarded to Anne-Marie Walters from the USA and the Men’s Champion at Arms was awarded to Francis Lee from Hong Kong.

Canadian fencers swept the Men’s Combined Epee competition and Canada’s Karen Laansoo spoiled a US sweep in women’s Combined Epee.

Many thanks go to Dan Banks and his crew who ran the tournament, the many quality referees and the armoury lead by Patrick Morrow.  Thank you too to Vango Fencing Management and staff for the use of their quality venue, and to the many hard-working volunteers from Ontario, New Jersey, North Carolina and California. Thank you to the event’s generous sponsors and all participating Veterans fencers.
