Fencer Eleanor Harvey Finishes 6th at the Anaheim Women’s Foil Grand Prix

Eleanor Harvey (Hamilton, ON) had an outstanding weekend at the Women’s Foil Grand Prix event in Anaheim, California, finishing just off the podium in 6th place.

Harvey’s only loss came in the quarter-finals to USA’s Lee Kiefer, who went on to win bronze at this event after losing 15-14 to the eventual gold medalist. Harvey is now ranked 12th in the FIE world rankings.

Kelleigh Ryan (Ottawa, ON) also had a great weekend, finishing 32nd after losing to the eventual bronze medalist Leonie Ebert from Germany in the round of 32. Ryan defeated the number two seed of the event, Alice Volpi of Italy, in her round of 64 bout by a score of 15-11 to advance to the 32’s.

Alanna Goldie (Calgary, AB) also qualified for the main draw but lost her 64 bout to Camilla Mancini of Italy, who went on to take silver in the event. Goldie finished in 57th place.

The top placings in Anaheim in the Men’s Foil Grand Prix event were Mikhail Sweet (Winnipeg, MB) and Eli Schenkel (Canadian living abroad) who just missed making the top 64, finishing 75th and 77th respectively.

The Canadian Women’s Sabre team was in Athens, Greece for a World Cup this past weekend and finished top 16 in the team event. The team of Marissa Ponich (Edmonton, AB), Gabriella Page (Blainville, QC), Pamela Brind’Amour (St. Martine, QC) and Madison Thurgood (Edmonton, AB) defeated Turkey an exciting 45-44 to advance to the top 16, where they lost to France 45-19. Canada eventually finished in 15th place overall after a close 45-41 loss to Ukraine, 45-38 loss to Germany and a 45-39 win against Hong Kong in the top 16 placing bouts.

Malinka Hoppe Montanaro (Montreal, QC) finished in 6th place at the Women’s Epee Satellite event in Turku. Montanaro’s first loss came in the quarter-finals against Nelli Differt from Estonia who won bronze in the event.
