Fencer Eleanor Harvey Moves Up to Top Eight in Women’s Foil World Rankings

Eleanor Harvey’s 11th place finish at the Reinhold World Cup in Tauberbischofsheim, Germany moves her to top eight in the Women’s Foil World Rankings. Harvey who is from Hamilton, Ontario has had a great 2016-17 season, consistently finishing in the top 16.

Harvey defeated Maria Teresa Diaz from Spain 15-7 in the 64’s and then defeated Japan’s Komaki Kikuchi 15-9 in the 32’s. Harvey’s first loss came in the 16’s, falling 15-10 to Fanny Kreiss of Hungary to give her an 11th place finish overall for the event.

Canada also had three other athletes make it through poules and the elimination round to the 64’s, where they finished their competition. Alanna Goldie (Calgary, AB) was 37th, Junior Ariane Bilodeau (Outremont, QC) was 42nd and Kelleigh Ryan (Ottawa, ON) was 49th.

Canada also had a great showing in the team competition. Canada’s team, made up of Alanna Goldie, Eleanor Harvey, Kelleigh Ryan and Shannon Comerford (Saskatoon, SK) finished in 6th place. After defeating Hong Kong 45-24, the team lost a close match in the quarter-finals to Italy by a score of 45-39. In the placing bouts for top 8, Canada defeated Hungary a tight 42-40, before losing to USA 45-41 to take 6th place overall.
