Medal for Canada in the First Day at the 2015 Fencing Cadet & Junior World Championships

It was a great start to the 2015 Fencing Cadet & Junior World Championships in Tashkent, Uzbekistan with Canada’s Loic Beaulieu (Sherbrooke, QC) reaching the podium in Men’s Cadet Epee.

Beaulieu won bronze in an event which featured 110 competitors from around the world. Seeded 30th after pool play with four wins out of six matches, Beaulieu faced Shiu Chong Law from Hong Kong in the round of 64 and defeated him 15-9. In the round of 32, he came up against Linus Islas Flygare from Sweden, seeded third in the event, and winning 15-13.  His round of 16 match was also a tough one, winning 15-13 once again, this time against Ivan Limarev from Russia. Next up was Valerio Cuomo from Italy in the round of 8 with Beaulieu once again coming out on top 15-13.

Beaulieu’s winning streak ended in the semi-finals with a heartbreaking loss of 15-14 to Jakob Jurka of the Czech Republic, earning him a bronze medal.  This is Canada’s second World Championship medal in Cadet Men’s Epee. Dylan French (Richmond, BC) won bronze in this event in 2014.

Cadet Women’s Epee was also in action today, with Monica Lubczynski (Pointe Claire, QC) earning Canada’s highest placing at 17th out of 89 competitors. 

Next up on April 2nd are Cadet Men’s Foil and Cadet Women’s Sabre.
