Stellar Weekend for Canadian Fencers

It was a busy weekend for Canada’s high performance fencers with several disciplines and age groups in action around the world.

Canada’s senior women’s foil team competed in a World Cup in Katowice, Poland. Eleanor Harvey (Hamilton, ON) continues to impress, finishing just off the podium in 5th place. Harvey defeated Russian Anastasia Ivanova 9-5 in her first bout and then won against Marta Lyczbinska of Poland 9-6 in her next bout to advance to the top 16’s where she faced Colombian Saskia Van Ervin Garcia and won 15-9. Harvey’s first loss of the day happened in the quarter-finals against Italy’s Camilla Mancini, with Harvey losing a close 15-12 to finish in 5th place overall.

Canada had several medals this past weekend at European Fencing Confederation (EFC) Cadet Circuit events.

Eight Canadian Women’s Cadet Foil Fencers took part in the EFC event in Poznan, Poland, a Canadian selection event for Cadet World Championships. Canada had four top 8 finishes, including a silver and a bronze medal, in an event that had 183 fencers from 20 countries. Jessica Guo (HHF, Toronto, ON) one of the youngest fencers in the competition, finished in 2nd place, while Tinney Mak (OTT, CDN living in US)) finished 3rd. Rounding out the top 8 were Ying Cao (TFC, Toronto, ON) who finished 6th and Jane Caulfield (EFC, Edmonton, AB) who finished 7th overall.

In the team competition, Canada’s team of Ying Cao, Jane Caulfield, Jessica Guo and Tinney Mak competed as Canada 1 in a field of 38 teams and won the gold medal! Canada defeated Poland in the final a resounding 45-15 to take home gold. Canada advanced to the final after defeating Romania 45-34 in the semi-finals.

Canada also had two fencers finish top 16, including a bronze medal at the Women’s Epee Cadet EFC event in Bratislava. The event, which featured over 240 fencers, saw Canada’s Christina Zozula (DYN, West Vancouver, BC) finish in third place with a bronze medal after losing to the eventual gold medalist from Hungary in her semi-final bout, while Justine Boudreau (OM, Sherbrooke, QC) finished in 15th place overall.

Canada’s Cadet Men’s Foil athletes were also in Bratislava for an EFC event and Patrick Liu (OTT, CDN living in US) finished 15th out of 169 fencers. The Men’s Foil Team of Niklas Holland (UNA, Toronto, ON), Alvin Poon (TFC, Toronto, ON) , Simon Poon (TFC, Toronto, ON) and Clayton Reid finished in 6th place.
