THREE CANADIANS PLACE IN THE TOP 64 AT THE MEN’S AND WOMEN’S FOIL GRAND PRIX IN ANAHEIM, CALIFORNIA

Canada’s top men’s and women’s foil athletes were in Anaheim, California this past weekend to take part in the FIE Grand Prix event.

In Women’s Foil, Eleanor Harvey(Hamilton, Ontario) had Canada’s top result finishing 34thoverall.  Harvey lost in the 64’s against Valentina De Costanzo from Italy 15-11.  Just missing the top 64 mark was Alanna Goldie(Calgary, Alberta) who finished in 73rdoverall and Kelleigh Ryan(Ottawa, Ontario) who finished 79th.

In Men’s Foil, Maximilien Van Haaster(Montreal, Québec) started off strong, winning all six of his poule bouts to advance directly to the 64’s. Van Haaster lost his bout in the main draw 15-7 to Valerio Aspromonte from Italy and finished in 39thplace.

Also placing in the top 64 was Eli Schenkel(CDN living in the US).  Schenkel performed well in poules with four wins and two losses. He won his elimination bout in the round of 128, 15-13 against Raul Arizaga from Mexico to move on and win another 15-13 match, but this time to Kenji Bravo from the USA.  His competition came to an end in the 64’s with his loss to Alaaeldin Abouelkassem from Egypt 15-10, placing him 53rdoverall.

Just missing the top 64 mark was junior aged Blake Broszus(CDN living in the US) who finished 68thoverall.
