Two Gold Medals and a Fifth Place Finish for Fencers in International Competition This Weekend

It was a great weekend for Canadian fencers with two gold medal performances by Canadians in FIE Satellite competition.

Shaul Gordon (Montreal, QC) was in Reykjavik at an FIE Men’s Sabre Satellite competition and came away with the gold medal by defeating Argentinean Staphano Luchetti 15-13 in the final.  After a faultless round in poules, he eliminated Gunnar Agusstson from Iceland 15-6 in the top 32, and then faced Englishman Zachary Hamilton in the 16’s to win 15-6. He defeated Poland’s Mateusz Knez 15-11 in the quarter-finals to advance to the semis where he defeated American Jonah Shaingberg 15-11.

Kelleigh Ryan (Ottawa, ON) was in Copenhagen competing in the Women’s Foil Satellite event. She too came away with the gold medal after defeating Amita Berthier of Singapore by the score of 15-9 in the final.

Ryan went unbeaten in poules. She defeated Irene Enright of Finland 15-4 in the top 32, Katie Smith 15-6 in the top 16, and then won against Italian Marta Ricci, 15-10 in the quarter-finals. She won her semifinal bout against another Italian, Olga Calissi by the score of 14-11. Both Ryan and Gordon were undefeated in their respective competitions.

In other news, the Youth Olympic Games have started and Jane Caulfield from Edmonton, Alberta was in action in women’s foil.   After starting the day with five wins and one loss in poules, Caulfield defeated Australian Georgia Salmas in the top 16 by the score of 15-8.  Caulfield then faced Venezuelan Anabella Acurero in the quarter-finals, losing 14-5 to finish in 5th place overall at her first major Games.

Seraphim Jarov (Surrey, BC) and Arianne Léonard (Saint-Lambert, QC) are in action tomorrow in Buenos Aires in men’s and women’s epee.  Go Canada Go!!
