Two Silver Medals for Canada on First Day of Team Competition at the 2019 Senior Pan American Fencing Championships

On the first day of team competition at the 2019 Senior Pan American Fencing Championships in
Toronto, Canada added two silver medals to bring its total medal tally to 7 with two days left of
competition.
Canada’s women’s foil team of Alanna Goldie (Calgary, AB), Eleanor Harvey (Hamilton, ON), Jessica Guo
(Toronto, ON) and Kelleigh Ryan (Ottawa, ON) defeated Mexico 45-31 in the quarter-finals. Canada then
fenced Brazil in the semi-finals and won by a commanding 45-18 to advance to the finals. There they
faced the USA, currently ranked third in the world. It was a hard fought battle, but the Americans came
out on top, in the end, winning 45-42 to give Canada a silver medal.
Canada’s men’s sabre team of Shaul Gordon (Montreal, QC), Joseph Polossifakis (Laval, QC), Fares Arfa
(Laval, QC) and Marc Gelinas (Blainville, QC) had a strong start to their day, defeating Mexico in the
quarter-finals by a score of 45-25. The team then fenced Colombia in the semi-finals and won 45-29.
This put them in the final against the USA, currently ranked 8 th in the world. Canada stayed within range
until the end when the USA pulled ahead to win 45-37. Canada took home its second silver medal of the
day.
Team competition continues today with Men’s Foil and Women’s Epee in action at the Delta Airport
Hotel & Conference Centre. Competition wraps up July 2 nd with the final day of team competition
featuring men’s epee and women’s sabre. Admission is free. Live results can be found at:
