Weekend Recap, Jan. 12 – Strong Start in 2016 for Canadian Fencers

Canadian fencers were in action all over the world this past weekend. In the important Olympic Qualification run, Men’s Sabre athlete Joseph Polossifakis (Laval, QC) continues to stretch his lead in the zone with another medal performance at a Satellite tournament. Polossifakis earned silver at the FIE Satellite event in Istanbul, Turkey, losing a close 15-13 in the final.

Women’s Sabre athlete Gabriella Page (Blainville, QC), also competed in Istanbul in the FIE Women’s Satellite tournament and finished with a bronze medal, earning important Olympic qualification points.

Meredith Giroux (Edmonton, AB) also had a good tournament, finishing 6th in the same event. Meanwhile, in the Men’s Epee Satellite tournament in Stockholm, Jean Lelion (Montreal, QC) finished 10th.

Many of Canada’s top up-and-coming fencers were in St. Louis, Missouri for the North American Cup (NAC) from January 8-11, 2016. The event featured Senior Division 1 and Junior competition in all weapons. Canada came away with three silver medals and eight other top 16 finishes.
