Referee selection criteria for assignments

These criteria are based on 2 main principles:

  • Referees must be available domestically if they want to work internationally.
  • In regards to the FIE, we need to give exposure to as many international referees as possible.

Domestic selection

-License requirements: Paid members of and in good standing with CFF to be considered for selection (must have by call for availability deadline)

-Availability: Priority will be given to full time availability for selection

-Experience – one FIE referee for each weapon

-Developmental opportunity

-Provincial/regional representation

-Respect of deadline: Must answer call for availability on time

-Head Official selection: Preferably must be a member of the Referee Committee

International Selections

FIE Designated Events (GP Lists, Championships and Games):

-License requirements: Paid members and in good standing of both CFF and FIE to be considered (must have by call for availability deadline)

-Domestic Availability over the previous two seasons: Must have been available to referee or refereed at a minimum of 50% of Canadian selection competition

-International work: Competency to officiate at the highest level of international competition

-Respect of deadline: Must answer call for availability on time

-*Specifically for GP List: Due to the limited amount of referees that can be nominated, a referee can be nominated only to the GP Lists for one weapon only, unless remaining spots are available.

Junior World Cups/Satellites

-License requirements: Paid members and in good standing of both CFF and FIE to be considered (must have by call for availability deadline)

-Domestic Availability over the previous two seasons: Must have been available to referee or refereed at a minimum of 50% of Canadian selection competition

-International Development: Recently licensed FIE referees and licensed FIE referees not on the FIE GP list of that specific weapon will be given priority.

-Respect of deadline: Must answer call for availability on time

International in country

-*Specifically for multiple weapon events: Priority will be given to referees holding more than one weapon.

Cadet International Competitions

Additional Considerations regarding Domestic Availability:

– Special considerations can be made by the committee for certain circumstances on a case by case basis if proper notification has been given to the committee (full time work obligations, personal matters, FIE assignments, etc.)

– Selection at Canadian Selection competitions is not a requirement to meet the Domestic Availability criteria. If an available referee has not been selected at the event but was available for the event, it still counts towards the Domestic Availability criteria. However, if a referee is selected by the Referee Committee for a Canadian Selection event and has to cancel his/her presence, his/her availability for that event might be reconsidered pending special considerations.

Other Considerations:

– A referee selected by the Referee Committee for any event is expected to be present for the whole event. In case of domestic events, a selected referee must make sure that he’s present until at least 5PM on the last day of the event and make sure his travel arrangements are meeting this requirement.

– A referee selected by the Referee Committee for any event is expected to be available as a referee for the entire event. It is also expected that they are not eligible to pursue other interests at the event (e.g.: coaching, fencing)
